ALL WALKS IN 2024 WILL RETURN TO SANDGATE-
Royally appointed Guide - Raymond Porter
UPDATE - THE RIVER KENT IS IN FRONT OF THE ISLAND MAKING IT CHALLENGING TO ACCESS TO ISLAND IT WILL BE DECIDED ON THE DAY BY THE GUIDE IF IT IS SAFE TO CROSS TO GO ON THE ISLAND.
Raymond the guide for 2024 bay walk season will walk walkers near Chapel Island & then on to the historic Colins Weir.
The Guide will do a safety briefing to all walkers at the start time of the walk. The Guide over Sands Trust will supply one toilet for walkers to use some charities may add more however please give yourself plenty of time.
Once briefing has started all walkers are under the responsibility of the Guide.
Once the walk sets off if you miss the start you CANNOT catch up for your own safety.
We set of walking along the headland of Sandgate, the headland at times can be uneven surfaces and slippery so care must be taken at all times.
Once we get on the sand there will be wet areas to cross barefoot is the best however you are also fine to wear shoes but be aware you will get wet up to the knees sometimes and barefoot is the best.
We then walk roughly 4 miles to Chapel Island and then onto Colins Weir then back round to Sandgate shore and make sure where possible observing the wildlife around us,
Depending on the time of year due to the nesting birds we can only go on the Island from the 1st August 2024 therefore we will observe from 250 metres away we will take a small lunch break before the crossing. However in 2024 the River Leven is in front of the Island therefore you cannot access the island.
Once we set off it is important to not stop you MUST keep walking across at all time unless the Guide stops the walk.
If you do get into difficulty, please do not get your friends to help as they will get stuck leave it to Raymond assist you or the charity marshalls will alert Raymond.
One the sand all walkers are to not take short cuts this again is for your own safety the route has been marked by the Guide and no one must cut corners as the route the Guide walks is the safest and you will be at risk of getting stuck. The bay is a dangerous place.
A Toilet is provided at the beginning of the walk at Sandgate shore, please note that the area is surround by working farms, therefore dogs must be kept on leads at all times.
The travel options to travel to the start of the walk are:
1. Drive to Sandgate shore, Flookburgh. Parking is available in the farmers field however please park considerably and do not go near the eletric fence, keep dogs and children under control at all times
2. Public transport nearest train station, Cark & Station.
